Trek Hours (Average): 5 to 6 hours
Max. Altitude: 5300 m

Mighty Mt. Everest is like a magnet for trekkers, photographers and even those visitors who prefer to witness its majesty from one of the special mountain flights.

The Everest trail is second only to the Annapurna route in popularity – and the trek to the base camp of the world’s highest peak can be accomplished by anyone with a good level of general fitness.

Reaching base camp is as close to the top of the monumental mountain as most adventurers get. Actually, you cannot see the summit from Base Camp itself - but we take you to places where the giant mountain looms fantastically and photogenically large!

Among the highlights of this trek are Namche Bazaar, the area’s lively trading post, Tyangboche, an important Buddhist monastery with close links with Everest and its climbers – and incredible views of Khumbu Himal and Lhotse.

Everest Base CampVisually, the most awesome of dozens of incredible vistas is probably the classic view of Everest from Kalapather, the ‘black rock’, which is recognized as one of the most beautiful and impressive mountain views in the world.

And another truly spectacular sight comes on the Dingboche-Lobuche section of the trek, where you have the opportunity to see and photograph three of the six highest peaks on earth : Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu in one remarkable glimpse !

Of course, your greatest buzz of all will probably come from reaching base camp, feeling a huge sense of personal achievement - and being part of the highly charged atmosphere of excitement and anticipation which this place generates.

From here a fabulous Himalayan panorama is visible, including the peaks of Kwangde, Tawachee, Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Kamtega and Thamserke. Tyangboche lies not far below Ama Dablam, a mountain which many consider to be the most beautiful in the entire Himalayas. Overnight in Mountain Lodge.

DAY 07: TYANGBOCHE – DINGBOCHE (4343 M, 5.5 HRS)
“The most beautiful place on earth – it would be difficult to imagine a finer site for worship or contemplation” – this is how the explorer W.H. Tillman described the vantage point from the trail below Tyangboche, with Everest standing majestically black and dizzyingly high, while Ama Dablam is sublimely beautiful, swathed in a mantle of fresh snow. We pass through an ornate Buddhist portal en route to the little village of Dingboche, a long cluster of stone houses and walled pastures. Overnight in Mountain Lodge.

DAY 08: DINGBOCHE – LOBUCHE (4930 M, 6 HRS)
The major highlight today is the legendary viewpoint where three of the world’s six highest mountains – Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu – are visible in one glance. You will follow the trail above Khumbu Khola, descending to cross the river at Dughla. Now we will be walking along the terminal moraine of the Khumbu glacier, climbing steeply to the crest, where there is a long row of monuments to Everest’s fatalities. We see Pumori, or ‘Daughter Peak’ coming into view shortly before reaching Lobuche. Overnight in Mountain Lodge.

DAY 09: LOBUCHE – GORAK SHEP – EVENING TREK TO EVEREST BASE CAMP AND RETURN (5300 M, 8 HRS)
We follow the western side of the Khumbu valley, climbing steadily alongside the glacial moraine. For a time we walk through the rubble of the Changri glacier – sometimes the path here is indeterminate and has to be navigated with the help of cairns or even yak dung! Soon the conical peak of Pumori appears. On the lower slopes is the southward-running ridge with the peak Kala Pather (5545m) at one end. Kala Pather (‘black rock’) is the best vantage point for Everest on the whole trek. Below Kala Pather is the sandy basin Gorak Shep (5160m), which has a small lake and several monuments. Gorak Shep is the location of original Everest Base Camp with new base camp being further up the valley. The path to Base Camp leads onto the Khumbu glacier itself passing seracs of ice as high as 15m. As we approach the area near the base of the Khumbu icefall we begin to see evidence of human activity which marks our arrival at Everest Base Camp! With the great view of Nuptse, Lho La and Khumbutso in front of us, we will retrace back. Overnight in Mountain Lodge.

DAY 10: EARLY MORNING TREK TO KALA PATHER (5545m) – RETURN TO GORAK SHEP – LOBUCHE (4930 M, 6 HRS)
Today you can look forward to another dazzling view which will imprint itself on your mind forever; the classic picture of Everest, the sides of its soaring peak etched crisply against the sky. From upper Kala Pather it is easy to see the legendary South Col, where most of the Everest expeditions have set up their highest camp. Due east and south is the Khumbu Glacier and above is a different perspective of Ama Dablam. On being back to Gorak Shep, we have breakfast followed by a gradual descend down to Lobuche. Overnight in Mountain Lodge.

DAY 11: LOBUCHE – DINGBOCHE, 4343 M, 4 HRS
Today we retrace our steps to Dughla and move uphill to a path high above the valley floor, to Dusa and the head of the Imja Valley. From here are tremendous views of Island Peak and Makalu. Overnight in Mountain Lodge.

DAY 12: DINGBOCHE – NAMCHE BAZAAR, 3460 M, 6 HRS
We follow the trail down through the Imja Khola valley, crossing the Khumbu Khola and return to Phunki Thangkha before ascending a ridge and walking in to Namche Bazaar. Overnight in Mountain Lodge.
